A quick intro into DnD

Welcome and let me be the first to offer my congratulations. If you are watching this video it means (Most likely) that I or some other person in your life loves you enough to try and spend time together. Scarily enough if you are watching this that means you are on your first little baby steps to joining a game of Dungeons and Dragons. Now I know what you’re thinking, Isn't that the game that nerds play in the Basement while still living at their parents' house? Why yes, yes it is. But it is also the game played by millions of other people that go about their lives in a normal fashion. Playing this game is not going to make you crave Doritos and mountain dew at all time of the day. You won't shriek every time you see the sun and cry out in terror when someone suggests doing something outside. In fact
If you are already watching this video and want to play but you just need to learn how everything actually works feel free to skip this video and move on to the next few videos that will be the nuts and bolts of the game. This video is primarily for convincing people that are on the fence at the moment.
If you have ever enjoyed reading and or watching ; Harry Potter, Marvel Movies, The Chronicles of Narnia, Jurassic Park, James Bond, The Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and of course anything from Mr. Tolkien then you have to face it you #1 might be a nerd yourself and #2 you will (more than likely) enjoy playing a game in which all of those worlds are combined. Besides, there is something wholesome about getting together with adult friends and being able to be around a table involved in the same thing without taking any phones out. You learn a lot about your friends and gain a lot of inside jokes and memories on which you can build stronger relationships with.
At its base Dungeons and Dragons is a social roleplaying and strategy game where you join a team of 3-8ish (depending on the individual running the game) in order to complete goals and have fun. That's right the stereotypical nerds game is a social-driven encounter in which how you say and act as your character determines the outcome of the game. Just like in real life, if your a dick to people and react in strange ways you're going to find yourself having a hard time. If you are charismatic and good at reading people you can make things a lot easier. Remember every person you meet and talk to has their own personal goals and ties that you may know about or may be held a secret. You can figure these things out through social dialogue and ask questions. It might seem silly at first but once you become comfortable with it you can greatly increase the believability of the world.
Which brings us to one of the first parts of playing which is creating your individual character. I'll go further into the explanation of how this works shortly, or if you really want to just skip to this part immediately feel free to do so. First (and this isn't the easiest concept to grab) Realize that the goal of the game is to say and do whatever you want. Whatever your twisted imagination is you can make it happen, Through working with your DM or using some “homebrew” online forum premade stuff. Just check with your DM and see what he is willing to allow, Which will probably be a lot.
In short (as this is more than likely your first time playing) it is common to play more exaggerated versions of yourself or if you are having a hard time imagining what that would be like, feel free to cast your favorite actor and or character from a movie or tv show. Keep in mind you will be acting as this person for the entirety of the game.
The other half of the game is combat based. If you have ever enjoyed playing Risk, Chess, Checkers or any other classic strategy game you will enjoy this part. The only difference is you don't get to describe the rook bashing in the pawns face to a bloody pulp for what it did to its friends. I like to say that if you enjoy trying to outwit people and complete puzzle you're going to like this. Use the map to your advantage and outplay the monsters you are fighting or pay the consequences. May I remind you that death is fairly finite in this universe (Not to say there aren't ways around it of course). I'll openly admit that as a DM I tend to be overly kind to starting players. I allow a lot of retcons to take back actions that the maybe were not aware of. Hell, the Player's Handbook is 311 pages I don't expect everyone to read through it, in fact, I imagine only I have done so (I'm lying I'm stuck on page 240). Not everyone will be as forgiving as me (Cough Cough *Eric* Cough Cough).
Either way, if you have made it this far the only thing you have left to do is just try it. I mean come on I've spent hours watching tv and reading books that I just can't seem to give less of a care about ( and I'm sure you have as well). So why not try it out? At least you have your friends to laugh with it about later, what's the worst that could happen? As long as you are open to trying it, whether you have fun or not really is up to an open mind and if the DM does a good job. I'll give you a hint and if you feel like you aren't having fun but you enjoy the role-playing and fighting, you might just have a bad DM…. The good news is that if that is how you feel that means you just might be the DM your group is looking for. But that's a video for a much later time.
